It is important to achieve and maintain a healthy mouth. It is far easier to prevent disease than treat it.
Adults
There are steps in which you can take to maintain a healthy mouth. Brush twice a day for at least two minutes, making sure you brush right into the gums (where your teeth and gums meet). Use fluoride toothpaste. Brush or scrape your tongue daily too. Don’t rinse your mouth just spit any excess toothpaste out. This will leave a coat of toothpaste on your teeth. Clean in between your teeth daily using dental floss and interdental brushes.
Keep snacking to a minimum trying to keep sugary foods to mealtimes, remember it is not how much sugars you have in one go that causes decay, it’s the frequency throughout the day.
Watch what you drink too, milk, water, tea and coffee without sugar are fine for your teeth.
Smoking
Smoking masks the signs of gum disease. Smoking restricts the blood vessels to your teeth which then will accelerate gum disease without you knowing. Smoking also increases the risk of oral cancer especially if you drink more than the government recommendation of alcohol units on a regular basis. If you stop smoking your teeth will be brighter and your breath sweeter too.
